The Paris of Appalachia:  A Tour and Tasting in the Homes & Gardens of Old Allegheny

Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 from 5:00-9:00pm
Saturday, June 6 from 12:30-4:30pm

We’re well on our way for our summer fundraising event…

It’s a home and garden tour. It’s a wine tasting. It’s an entire evening of great food and entertainment.

This year our tour will be highlighting France and featuring both red and white regional French wines, hors d’oeuvres paired to complement those wines, cheese tastings at seven homes and gardens in our neighborhood. This year we are having all the tours gather together at not only the beginning of the tour at John DeSantis’ but also at the end for a wine and chocolate pairing at Jim Wallace’s!  We have invited a wine specialist to educate guests, guides and homeowners about wine tasting.  Our tour guides will be pointing out French Second Empire influences throughout the neighborhood.

Tickets, $70 each, are now on sale on our website or by calling 1-888-71-TICKETS, M-F from 9am-9pm.  Tickets are limited to 75 on each of the three tours (a total of 225 tickets), and only about 90 remain, so get the word out to friends, relatives and co-workers to purchase them now.

Homes on Tour

  • John DeSantis – Brighton Road
  • Cathy Serventi and Gene Wilson – 800 block Beech Avenue
  • Brian O’Neill and daughters – 800 block Beech Avenue
  • Howard and Shirley Brockenbek – 900 block Beech Avenue
  • Doug Lucas – 900 block Beech Avenue
  • Jim Wallace – 800 block N Lincoln Avenue

Volunteer Opportunities

Our neighborhood cooks and bakers who have volunteered to make hors d’oeuvres to serve at one stop on the tour.  If you can help them in their efforts in creating 225 appetizers — you just need to follow their instructions — please let us know as soon as possible. We need volunteers to help the homeowners with food prep, serving, pouring wine and clean up. Please let us know if we can count on you for one, two or all three tours. It’s a lot of fun to help with this event — and you’re invited to our volunteer party on Saturday!  We need new and creative ideas for publicity for the event. Let us know as  soon as possible if you know of a place of business who will hang our flyers or a website where we should list our event (gratis!). Flyers are available for you to take to work, too—let us know how many you need.

So …… please let us know how you can contribute by contacting Trish Burton (tours@alleghenywest.org)

Believe It or Not, It’s Planning Time for Our Summer Fundraiser!

Submitted by Trish Burton

Winter is unfortunately still with us, but it’s now time to start planning for the AWCC summer 2015 fundraiser, A Tour & Tasting in the Homes and Gardens of Old Allegheny, to take place this year on Friday evening, June 5 and Saturday evening, June 6, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. It’s a house and garden tour. It’s a wine tasting. It’s an evening of entertainment.

This year our tour will be highlighting France and featuring both red and white regional French wines, hors d’oeuvres paired to complement those wines and cheese tastings and desserts at seven homes and gardens in our neighborhood. We have invited a wine specialist to educate guests, guides and homeowners about wine tasting.

We may still need a home for the tour, so If you would like to offer to open your home or garden for the tour, please contact us as soon as possible. We also will need many volunteers to:

  • Be tour guides
  • Help homeowners to serve, pour and clean up
  • Help run the tour that weekend (take tickets, direct visitors, etc.)
  • Be on our committee (and while we promise to limit the number of meetings, remember that we always “taste” wine at those meetings!)

First meeting will be Feb. 19, 2015 at 7:00 pm at the Burton’s, 926 Beech Avenue. Join us!

If you can help with any of these, or if you can provide any stories about French influences in our neighborhood, please contact us at tours@alleghenywest.org , or call either Trish Burton at (412) 523-9402 or Deb Kelly at (724) 316-7213.

Please help us to get the word out to friends and co-workers about our event. Tickets can soon be purchased on our website, www.alleghenywest.org or by calling 1-888-71-TICKETS, Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 9:00 pm.
