Allegheny Commons Park Updates + Events

Playground Removal

The Department of Public Works will be removing the playground in the West Commons (near the deer pit/Gus & Yia Yia’s) due to safety concerns. The Swings were replaced a few years ago so they will stay open. DPW will be putting the replacement of the safety surface and playground in the 2021 capital budget request.

(volunteer clean up of Lake Elizabeth)

The Parks Conservancy in partnership with Allegheny CleanWays and the City are hosting a cleanup of Lake Elizabeth in Allegheny Commons Park on the Northside. Volunteers will be working alongside staff to remove debris from the recently drained lake on the following days/times:

West Ohio Street Bridge Construction

PITTSBURGH, PA (June 18, 2020) The City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) is pleased to announce the start of construction on the new West Ohio Street Bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Allegheny Commons Park in the Allegheny Center neighborhood of the City. The bridge has been closed to traffic since January 2018 due to deterioration of the 117-year-old structure. When construction is completed in the Fall of 2021, the new West Ohio Street bridge will support a full return of service between Allegheny Commons and Allegheny West.

In the coming weeks, a temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed to allow for continuous pedestrian access over the railroad during the project.

For questions, please contact the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure at

Lake Elizabeth Clean Up (Details to Come)

I just spoke with the Dept of Public Works and have the following information to share:

  • DPW will begin draining the lake today or tomorrow. It will take a week or so for the lake to drain and fully dry out before we can have a clean up event.
  • The Parks Conservancy will coordinate some volunteer events in the coming weeks to assist with the cleaning of the lake
  • DPW will not be able to work alongside volunteers but will work on separate days to further clean out the lake.
  • These events will be permitted given people are practicing social distancing and all the proper safety measures which will be shared on our website and on site at the lake during the event.

Please stay tuned for a date and additional information coming soon.

Thank you,

Neighborhood Clean-ups and Planting Begin

Our first clean-up will be on Saturday, April 28th. Meet at 9:00 am at the AWCC office at 806 Western Avenue to get coffee and supplies. Or, just attack an area that you think needs work (and most of our alleys definitely fit in this category!) Hope to see many of you there!

Babb, Inc. has again generously offered their time and energy to helping plant and mulch the AW parklet on May 23rd. We hope to be able to plant and mulch some of the tree wells along Western Avenue as well, so if you can volunteer some of your time that day, we’d welcome your help. Please contact Trish Burton or Diane Caruso (see here for info).

Alleyway-Focused Neighborhood Cleanup!

A special thanks to Dr. Dan, Eleanor Coleman and Ann Gilligan – and any anonymous workers!–for weeding and picking up litter throughout the neighborhood. This has made all of our jobs easier.

In anticipation of the Alleys, Axles & Ales tour on September 23rd, we’re asking that EVERYONE help to rid the alleys behind their properties of weeds and litter – most are in terrible need of attention right now! Anyone needing trash bags and gloves (can be delivered to your front door) should email Trish at

Thanks for your continuing help in beautifying Allegheny West!

Trish Burton/Diane Caruso

Neighborhood Cleanup

This month’s neighborhood cleanup will take place on May 20th at 9:00 am. Meet at the AWCC office at 806 Western Avenue. This event is BYOB – bring your own broom, that is! (And gardening gloves, too!)

Contact Trish Burton with any questions: or (412) 523-9402. We’ll see you on the 20th!

Neighborhood Cleanup

April 22nd is Earth Day, and Allegheny West will celebrate by holding its first clean-up day.

Meet at the Allegheny West office at 806 Western Avenue for coffee and breakfast treats and to gather some trash bags and gloves. If you have your own gloves, brooms, and tools, please bring them! Begin to look for areas in the neighborhood that need to be freshened after the winter. We’ll also have a group that will attack the leaves in the parklet at the corner of Brighton and Western.

Contact Trish Burton with any questions: or (412) 523-9402. We’ll see you on the 22nd!

Neighborhood Cleanups

There is no neighborhood cleanup in November. Last-Saturday-of-the-month cleanups will resume in the spring of 2017. Thanks to all who have come out for the cleanups in 2016. And thank you to Michael Shealey for organizing the cleanups!

October Neighborhood Cleanup

The October neighborhood clean-up will be held on the last Saturday of the month, October 29th from 9:00 – 11:00 am. The focus of this month’s clean up will be on clearing and preparing the parklet in preparation for winter. For those who wish to garden, please bring your own gloves and tools. Meet at the AWCC office at 806 Western Avenue. Refreshments will be provided.

Questions? Contact Michael Shealey.
